Dorothy Dandridge


Background:





Full name : Dorothy Jean Dandridge

Born in Cleveland Ohio on November 9, 1922

Her mom, Ruby Dandridge, was an aspiring actor.

Dorothy's mom walked out on her dad, Cyrus, before she was born.

Her older sister was Vivian.

Geneva Williams became Ruby's lover and helped the girls with their singing, dancing, and piano.

Dorothy and Vivian became the Wonder Children. they signed with the National Baptist Convention and preformed at churches throughout the southern states.

They spent three years on the road.

After the Great Depression came, they all moved to hollywood.

They landed their first big break when they received an uncredited cameo in the film The Big Broadcast of 1936.

Moved to New York with Geneva and Vivian to work for the Cotton Club. Her mom stayed in Hollywood.

September 6, 1942, she married Harold Nicholas.

She refused to play roles blacks usually would, such as maids.







Success:






She was a sucessful actor and eventually won a golden globe award.

One of her most famous films was Carmen Jones, released on November of 1954.

She appeared on the cover of the November 1, 1954 issue of Life, photographed as Carmen.

Dorothy Dandridge was the first black woman to be nominated in the category of Best Actress.
